How We Do It
Scholarships
MinneapolisNEXT seeks out hard-working students who want to be challenged by coursework and prepare for college. Since 1998, we’ve provided hundreds of scholarships so these young people can attend local, private college-preparatory schools, such as DeLaSalle High School, Maranatha Academy, St. Thomas Academy, St. Agnes School and Breck School. We currently award over 40 scholarships per year. The pride and self-esteem that blossoms in these kids is gratifying, as is the sometimes dramatic improvement in reading and other basic skills we often see as they thrive in their new environments. Several classes of MinneapolisNEXT scholarship recipients have graduated from high school, and dozens are attending institutions of higher learning such as Boston College, Drake University, St. Olaf College, Spelman College, and the University of Minnesota. Many have graduated from college.
Extra-Curricular Programs
For several years, MinneapolisNEXT has cultivated a relationship with the Hollywood School of Dance in North Minneapolis. We fund ballet and modern dance classes for approximately 40 of the 200 young students who attend the highly regarded studio. You'll find us beaming in the front row at recitals. We also sponsor other recreational activities.
Special Needs
MinneapolisNEXT has provided students with assistance in preparing for college entrance exams. We also have assisted immigrant students with their transition to new schools in the Twin Cities by providing bicycles, computers and other useful items. MinneapolisNext has provided both private and public schools with occasional funding for educational tools, including special reading programs, computers, musical instruments and field trips. In one instance, we contributed to the capital campaign of a North Minneapolis art outreach program.
